812 Aviles Cruz

On October 4th, hundreds of skilled union workers from across the country flew to Puerto Rico to assist in recovery operations.   Among the volunteers on the flight were Local 812 members Luis Aviles (Clare Rose), Bobby Cruz (Clare Rose), Marlon Chavarria (Pepsi Transport), Carlos Luis Pagan  (Pepsi Transport) and Dave Fonz (Manhattan Beer).

Hurricane Maria decimated the island’s infrastructure, leaving residents without electricity, medication, food and clean water.  In response, Teamster Joint Council 16 put out the call for member volunteers who hold CDL licenses to transport shipping containers from the port to distribution centers throughout the island.

Local 812 President Ed Weber said, “It’s easy to feel helpless in the face disaster.  But these men are making personal sacrifices to ensure that the people of Puerto Rico get desperately needed supplies.  It is a matter of life and death.  These Teamsters are true heroes and I couldn’t be prouder to call them union brothers.”

Weber also thanked all of the Local 812 members who have donated to the Teamsters Disaster Relief Fund.  Click here to donate.

We wish all of the volunteers a safe and successful journey.  The well being of all Puerto Rican residents remains in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
