In loving memory of Matt Scarpati, son of Local 812 Comptroller Jim Scarpati and his wife Lynn Scarpati, Local 812 proudly participated in The Miles For Matt Celebrate 5K Run.

The mission of the Miles for Matt Foundation is to support the educational journey of students, their development through sports activities and for recreational safety in public venues  The Foundation advances this mission primarily through its work in education, athletics and medical research and strives to continue the interests and goals that Matt held.

Matt’s story is tragic.  On July 20, 2009, Matt was working in Manhattan at his first summer job. He took the LIRR home and headed out to the Wantagh State Bike Path in Nassau County for a bike ride.  A man, who was driving under the influence and at an excessive rate of speed, drove his motorcycle off the parkway and directly into Matt.  Help was on its way immediately and he was airlifted to NUMC.  However, none of the skilled medical personnel could save his life, who at 19, was a vibrant and active college student.   His memory lives on through the work of the Foundation.
