Pepsi-Cola LI Committee Reaches Deal

With the current contract expiration looming, Local 812’s Pepsi-Cola Long Island Negotiation Committee unanimously voted to recommend a new 5-year contract to members.  The tentative contract has no give-backs and preserves health and retirement benefits along with annual wage increases.  It also provides job security.

Significantly, Pepsi agreed to higher payments into the Local 812 Health Fund.  With the new contribution rates, Pepsi-Cola NY members and their families – both active and retired -will have no reduction in medical benefits.   Workers’ costs will not increase and there will be no paycheck deductions for medical care.

Annual wage increases total more than 20% over the life of the contract.  That is on top of  several increases in various differentials and title-specific bumps.  Pepsi also agreed to increase annuity contributions.  The attendance policy has been amended to raise the number of points reached for arbitration to 7.

This coming week, both the Pepsi LI and Pepsi NY contracts will go to a vote of members for ratification.  Contract details will also be distributed.  Contact your Steward or Business Agent with any contract or ratifications questions.

Tentative Agreement at Pepsi-Cola NY

After months of tough contract negotiations, the Local 812 Negotiation Committee voted to recommend a new 5-year contract on May 19th. The vote was unanimous.  The proposed contract achieves the Committee's main objectives – preserving health and retirement benefits, and annual wage increases with no givebacks.

The most contentious issue was increased employer payments to the Local 812 Healthcare Fund.  With the new contribution rates, Pepsi-Cola NY members and their families will be able to hold on to all of their healthcare benefits at no added costs to workers. Pepsi NY workers will have no payroll deductions for healthcare. Local 812 President Vitta explained, “Our members, both active and retired, will be able to rely on our Fund benefits for years to come.  And they won’t have their wage gains reduced by having to pay higher co-pays, co-insurance or deductibles.”

The annual wage increases total more than 20% over the life of the contract.  That is in addition to a number of increases in various differentials, certifications and title-specific bumps.  During a union caucus, Local 812 Secretary Treasurer John Visconti said, “This is the first time in all my years in the union, that we’ve seen annual wage increases of 4 or 5 percent at Pepsi. This contract recognizes the critical role our members play in the company’s success.”

The proposed contract will next go to a vote of Pepsi-Cola NY members for ratification.  Contract details will also be distributed.  Contact your Steward or Business Agent with any contract questions.

Soda Talks Continue as Contract Expirations Near

With less than a month remaining until the expiration of Local 812’s Liberty Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola NY and Pepsi-Cola Long Island contracts, Local 812’s Negotiation Committees are gearing up and scheduling frequent meetings with the companies in hopes of reaching fair deals for union members.

At the last meeting with Liberty Coca-Cola management on May 5th, our core economic issues - healthcare, wages and retirement - were finally addressed at the table.  While we have not reached agreements on any of those issues, we are at least encouraged that the company appears to be ready to engage in serious talks.

Despite the efforts of Local 812’s Pepsi-Cola NY Committee, we can report no real progress.  Again this week, Pepsi management declined to discuss our economic demands, which we handed them more than three months ago.

Both Liberty Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola negotiations resume next week.  Our Contract Committees will continue fighting for good contracts until the May 31 expiration date.  If acceptable deals aren’t reached by then, union leaders are authorized to call strikes if necessary.

Our true strength remains the unity of our membership. Do your part for a good contract - stay informed and stay involved!

Coke and Pepsi Negotiations Underway

Local 812’s Contract Negotiation Committees have begun meetings with Coke, Pepsi NYC and Pepsi Long Island management.  The main priorities are maintaining the industry-setting standards that Local 812 has long established, including preserving health care and retirement benefits.

By near unanimous votes, members from each bargaining unit have authorized the union to call a strike if needed.  While we do not hope to strike, we are providing our union leaders with the backing they need to win the best possible agreements.
